Address search, 1891
« on: Friday 23 August 13 13:25 BST (UK) »
Is anyone able to search on an address for me in the 1891 census, please?

Who lived at 18, Swan St, "London" -- on the map, Swan St is parallel to Borough Rd, and I think would probably be Southwark; or if not Southwark, probably Newington.

Many thanks :)

Hello Annie....

The numbers 14-20 Swan Street Newington , were all used as workshops and stables in 1891.

Are you looking for someone in particular ?

It was a long shot ---

Thomas Brown is proving very elusive; born in either Bermondsey or Rotherhithe, some time between 1844-50ish, first marraige unknown (and of course that's the one I want to find).

I can't find him in the 1891 census, and don't know if his first wife was still alive at the time but in 1898 he remarried at St Mary Magdalene, Southwark,, and both he and his bride gave the address of 18 Swan St.

So I had just hoped, against hope, that perhaps there would be some sight of him there a few years earlier.

Thank you for looking.

Hi Annie

Just been looking at the electoral registers for Swan Street 1898 +/- 10 years and number 18 is never listed as having an eligible voter.

Looked for Elizabeth Millichope also and she is still listed at 16 Adams Gardens with her husband William upto 1892 and then upto 1900 but her surname doesn't change to Brown?

Hi Dawn,

Maybe Thomas wasn't eligible to vote. Elizabeth and Thomas def married in 1898  so I presume that the electoral register wasn't up to date!

Keyboard, thank you for that tip - I have looked at so many Thomas B's I am going sken eyed but I don't know if that's one of them so will check it out.
