Samuel Salisbury Crime. 1887-1891
« on: Friday 23 August 13 18:37 BST (UK) »
Dear RootsChatters!
I have been trying to go more in depth with a few of my relatives, and Samuel Salisbury seems to be on my list.

I have a Samuel Sailsbury who was born on 8 March 1850. He married a women called Emma Dockham (whom was born in Maine, USA). They have several daughters one being my great great grandmother Bessie Salisbury in Maine, USA 1873. And their youngest being Eva May Salisbury being born 17 Aug 1883 in Rugby, England. His wife Emma died in Bedfordshire in 1888 (aged 38).

What I did notice is that their are several Samuel Salisbury that seem to have criminal records. one in 1887 which states Rape, and two in 1891 which state Cornally Knowing a girl under 13. His sentence was Aquitted.

I would be intrested if anyone would be able to view these records up on the local libirary or newspaper archives if anyone has access to these please as I would like to know more about him and why he was Aquitted.

I have Samuel Salisbury in 1881 census and 1891 census, I am unable to see him in any other census.

Kindest Regards
Andrew

In 1861 he is back to Samuel but mis-transcribed as SOLSBURY.  Mum Hannah is a widow and Samuel is an only child

Thank you for that ill . information. Any chance their might be a story in the local newspaper or something due to the fact that its basically Rape but yet he was Aquitted from both trials.

I know that he was a drawer and created a sign for a pub in Rugby, Warwickshire, England. I cant remember what the pub was I believe it might have been the black swan?

Regards
Andrew

Hi Andrew,

There is a newspaper article about the trial (5 July 1891) A Terrible Charge.

It doesn't make 'pretty reading'

I'll pm you.

JJ
