ASHTON's Clockmakers in Barton & Brigg 1780 & on wards
« on: Saturday 24 August 13 18:37 BST (UK) »
Hi,
We were given a Grandfather clock that has been in the family for several generations and would like to find out any info that we can on the builder.
We were told it was made by J. ASHTON app. 1780 in Brigg. Searching I found a William ASHTON on the 1835 Pigot's as a clockmaker in Market Place in Barton.

Were there any Directories earlier than that or any way of proving J.(John??) & William were related?

Thanks,
shearg

historical directories online

http://www.historicaldirectories.org

has Pigots 1829:
Barton: Clock makers
William Ashton, Brigg Road

thats as far back as online goes. think you will need to have someone visit FHS to go further. However it seems likely that business passed from father/son. have you tried apprenticeship records?

Thanks Diddy for all the info you found for me. Too bad the Directories didn't go back any further but I think you have proved a family connection.

Sorry to dig up an old thread but it appears that William Ashton, clock maker of Barton-upon-Humber, is my 2nd great-grandfather. I am currently trying to find his parents as his marriage certificate does not list his parents names.

I have found him in both 1828-9 and 1835 Pigot's as listed above but am unable to locate the apprenticeship information or the details about his parents, allegedly William snr and Mary Banks, as mentioned above.

Any help in finding these references would be appreciated.

Facts that I know about William Ashton, clockmaker, Barton-upon-Humber: -
Married 1811 in Sculcoates, Hull to Mary Cutsforth (parents not listed on register)
Died 1839, aged 48, in Owston Ferry, Lincolnshire

So far I have researched three William Ashton's born c1790: -

WA1) William Ashton son of Thomas Ashton and Elizabeth - Baptised 14 Feb 1790 Winterton, Lincolnshire, England
WA2) William Ashton -  son of William Ashton and Mary - Baptised 21 Feb 1790 Brant Broughton, Lincolnshire, England
WA3) William Ashton - son of John Ashton and Susanna - Baptised 21 Mar 1790 Tetford, Lincolnshire, England

WA1 is reported to have died c1820 according to another family tree on Ancestry, but no source identified.
WA2 appears in Brant Broughton in 1841 census aged 50 so he is ruled out.
WA3 died in Tetford in 1855, lots of sources to rule him out.

If anyone has an idea where to look next, I am all ears!

Do you have the marriage certificate for 1811 marriage, only there is a marriage on FreeReg on 6th June 1833 at St Mary`s Church, Barton, between William Ashton and a Mary Stow.
