Early map, Dartmouth Square, West Bromwich
« on: Sunday 25 August 13 09:54 BST (UK) »
Can anyone with maps of the top of the town help with this please?

I'm looking for 'Protector Place' or 'Protector Cottage' that was in existence up until at least the 1860's and possibly way beyond that date. I think it fronted the High Street and was in the vicinity of Scotland Passage/Bull Street.

A good clue is that at the rear of Protector Cottage was a former chapel which was used as auction rooms by one Septimus Davies up until his death in 1857.

I realise that all the old buildings in that area have gone but I have some old photos and I'd like to try and identify the building.

Looked in terry price's book  West Bromwich Yesterdays but nothing in there. Some photos of the area in question but earliest 1905. Not seen anything in the black country sites which would be of use. Nothing much comes up in Sandwell archive stuff either. What's your interest in this? It might be useful to look on tithe maps to look at the apportionments. It's difficult to know how old that place may be.

Thanks for looking, I've tried the usual suspects with no joy as well.

My interest is simply that I like to try to identify the places my ancestors lived as it adds a bit of colour to their stories.

Usually I take a photo myself if the building is still standing but if the building no longer exists and there's an old photo that might illustrate it, I like to try and isolate it in the picture. In this case there are plenty of photos of the top of the town that most likely include the building in question - it's probably just a case of finding a map with the chapel marked.

Thanks again

Paul

Funny enough i'd been thinking about the chapel. Which chapel is it? There was a Baptist chapel and a new connexion. There's books on black country chapels but I don't know which ones have been covered.

I've no idea, I didn't know there was a chapel in that location! I only came across it by chance when I read that Septimus Davies was using a former chapel (at the rear of Protector Place/Cottage) as an auction room.

You can see Protector Cottages on the 1:500 Town Plan at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=400776,291109

Excellent spotting Stan! I actually looked at that map yesterday but I was looking closer to High Street. I'm guessing the 'mission room' could be the former chapel too...

Many thanks,

Paul

The Alan Godfrey Maps are based on the OS 25" maps and Protector Cottages are not named on the 25" maps
