The Old Wire Mill and Little Liverpool at Gwersyllt
« on: Sunday 25 August 13 20:14 BST (UK) »
Hi. The 1871 Census Wales shows my great grandfather, Harry Havelock Williams living in a place called The Old Wire Mill in Gwersyllt. The families either side of him are described as living in Little Liverpool.  I have tried to research these places but come up blank. Presumably the Old Wire Mill once made wire and Little Liverpool was populated with people from Liverpool.

Does anyone have any information on these two places.

Thanks.

Go to www.old-maps.co.uk
Use the search term - Llay Road
Choose the first option  - ABC Nursery,Cefn y Bedd
When the map loads choose the 1875 !:2500 map from the list on the right
Little Liverpool is lower centre of the map(use in built magnifier or Windows zoom to enhance).

Regards
Roger

Apologies - later modification
The map is 1871-9 and without the adjustment I made, which I didn't specify.Little Liverpool will be top left

Thanks for that Roger, that was really useful.

The next address I have for him is 17 Wrexham Road but because his family come from Brymbo, I'd assumed it was the Wrexham Road that ran through New Broughton to the South of Brymbo. It's now possible that it's one and the same place.

It looks as though the old wire mill stood on or about the site that is now the Spectrum Home and Garden Centre (according to Google Maps).

Kind regards

Craig

The wire mills were founded by John Hayton in the 1780s.His will(proved 1804) is at www.llgc.org.uk wherein one image calls him "John Hayton of Gwersyllt wire mills"
This reference places them near Llay Hall

The wire mill was on the other side of the river at the back of Spectrum, Little Liverpool is shown as being where the renovated mill is.
There  are many local people who will argue that LL was the area at the back of the New Inn, and I can recall that it was called that years ago , but this maps shows differently.

Thank you wilcoxon and despair. I can see now it's unlikely ever to have had a named road attached to it.

Regards

Craig.

The next address I have for him is 17 Wrexham Road but because his family come from Brymbo,
Craig

I have him in 1881 in Lodge, and 1891 and 1901 in Wrexham Road.  Lodge , Brymbo, Still there ten years later .

1871 he is in the Old Wire Mill. This is in the parish of Gwersyllt.
He  has moved to Lodge which is a few miles away by 1881. Lodge is in the parish of Brymbo.

I`ve been told that the "Wrexham Road" is now known as Broughton Road, and in a book I have there is a list of men of military age in 1941, there are many living on Wrexham Road, but not a single mention of a Broughton Road, so I think the info given me is probably correct.
Of course I can`t be 100% sure as it is info from someone else , but he does live in that area.

There is still a Wrexham Road in Lodge, it runs from Southsea until it gets to the  junction of Broughton Road,(this road runs from Brynteg down to the Lodge,) then it becomes Broughton Road,it then went of to the left at the start of  Kent Road and up the back of the village towards the steelworks now all the houses on that road have gone as has that part of Wrexham Road disappeared when the steelworks put in their new rolling mill in 1980 now that has also gone along with nearly everything of the steelworks.  There are photo's of this part of Wrexham Road on a site about Brymbo but I can't remember the name sorry.

I`ve managed to find a map dated 1914
Wrexham Road is shown - highlighted in lime .
Broughton Road is - red.
They do seem to be all on the same line, with Wrexham Road higher up in the village.
