Battenrow/Rattenrow Frizington - Completed - Thanks GeoffE
« on: Sunday 25 August 13 20:29 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Probably another GeoffE one to solve - Could you point me in the right direction please.  Not sure if this should be Battenrow or Rattenrow, Frizington - it seems to be all one word on the 1851 census.

Thanks
Sandra

I don't really know.  I've seen it suggested that RottenRow is a corruption of French "route du roi" - King's highway.  Often, roads don't get a name till long after they are built.  :-\

I suspect from seeing things on 1861 census that they could have been on the straight road south of Frizington.  The census has High House, Howgate, Parkside etc which are in that area http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=303482&Y=516105&A=Y&Z=115

Old map http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=303427,516540

As I said, no idea. :(
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Hi Geoff,

Thanks very much.  Suspect it is Ratten Row which seems a common name in Cumberland at that time.

Thanks
Sandra
