Patrick (1819) and Mary (1827) Savage in Down, Ireland
« on: Tuesday 27 August 13 00:02 BST (UK) »
For the past several months I have been working hard to develop my families family tree and I have hit a road block with my surname, Savage's. Right now I have found out that my 3xGreat Grandparents, Patrick & Mary (maiden name unknown) Savage, were from Down, Ireland and were married there in 1851. From there I know they moved to Cleator, Cumberland, England soon after their marriage. They had seven kids, one of them being my 2xGreat Grandfather, Patrick Savage, in 1853. And, I know they were Catholic. That is pretty much where my information ends and I would love to know more about them and who their parents were.

If anyone has any suggestions or clues please feel free to let me know.

Thanks

The marriage certificate will list Mary's maiden name as well as the exact date and place of marriage and names and occupations of both fathers.

Mary's maiden name will also be listed on the birth certificates for any children born in England.

Savage is a very common Co. Down name as you will see from this site-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

This is great information. However, the problem I have been having is that we know they got married in 1851 based on a census record and I have not been able to find any marriage certificates anywhere.

During all my research I have really noticed that the Savage name is very common in Co. Down. I find this to amazing and exciting. I am will take a closer look at the census records and see if I can find anything else and also see if I can find a birth certificate for the kids.

Thank you

I have some free searches left over on RootsIreland.ie  but there is not a marriage in 1851 +/- 2 years for a Patrick Savage to a Mary in Co. Down.  There are marriages however in 1840,  1844 and 1846, you would have to buy some credits to see them.
How do you know the details of their marriage?  Is it just based on the fact that the oldest child is 9 on the 1861 census?
They may have had older children who stayed in Ireland or died.

Hello Bev,

The information we have is an old census record. However, when I asked my father to look at it closely last night he said it more likely would been a few years before 1850 or 1851. He is actually thinking that it might be 1845 or as you suggested it could be 1846.

I will go to RoodsIreland.ie and gets some credit to research this more.

Thank you so much Bev.
