Plaistow Cemetery war memorial
« on: Wednesday 28 August 13 18:56 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

My grandfather's younger brother, Roy Collier, was killed in a bombing raid on Haggerston Road in July 1944. I was once told that he was listed on a civilian war memorial in Plaistow Cemetery but it's unlikely that I'm going to make it down there to check for myself any time soon.

Would anyone who happens to be going to the cemetery one day mind checking this for me please? Apparently the bomb that killed my great uncle also killed several young women working at the nearby Gas Works although I don't know if any of them would be listed on the same memorial.

I've no idea whether Roy was actually buried in Plaistow Cemetery, or if his name just appears on the memorial. Does anyone have any tips to help me find this out?

Many, many thanks for any help you can give!

Hi Imber,

Thanks for the link, this confirms some of the facts I already had so it was good to see. There doesn't seem to be anything on the CWGC site to indicate where Roy was buried, so I'll keep looking.

Thanks!

E.

Did you see this? It doesn't answer your question but it's a bit more background:

You could always phone the East London Cemetery Company. There's also the Local History section at Newham, and this forum has plenty on the Blitz and you may stumble across someone helpful there:

Hi Luke,

Sorry for taking so long to reply to your message, I've been away for a couple of weeks.

I'm so grateful to you for taking the photos. It's wonderful to know that he's on a memorial and hasn't been forgotten. One day I'll go to the cemetery and see it for myself.

Many thanks

E.
