Sillard/Sellwood in Bedwyn
« on: Friday 30 August 13 23:33 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have access to Bedwyn BMB's, please? I am trying to find  baptisms that I have been told about but have not as yet been able to prove.
Stephen Sillard
baptism 24 Aug 1740 Little Bedwin Wilts of Stephen and Elizabeth

William Sillard born 1744
Bap 25 Nov 1744 Little Bedwin Wilts

James Sillard born 1754
Baptism 22 Dec 1754 Little Bedwin Wilts

The surname later became Sellwood. Stephen and Elizabeth as above are my brick wall.
Any help gratefully received.

Hi Vicwinann,

In case you don't already have it, I have this marriage in Little Bedwin taken from the Wilts FHS (Marriages CD);

#52416  30-9-1739 Stephen SILLARD, otp, to Elizabeth CHAPMAN of Great Bedwin

Unfortunately I don't have any baptism transcripts for Bedwin but this marriage appears to tie up with
the bapts. you list.

In case its worth anything there is a bapt;
Wootton Bassett;
24-4-1690 Stephen SELLWOOD s/o Thomas

Hi Alan,
That is definitely the marriage but Stephen's origins has me beaten. The Wootton Bassett 1690 baptism would put him nigh on age 50 at marriage.
Unfortunately, his burial in 1766 has no age but if he did marry later in life or for a second time, that might explain why there only appear to have been 3 children with Elizabeth.
The LDS has Elizabeth Chapman as being baptised Trowbridge 1716 which matches what Christs Hospital School has on its pedigree.
Thanks for trying to help.

Hi Vicwinann,

I expect you have already seen this entry but on the LDS there is an Elizabeth Chapman bapt. 9-1-1716 in Great Bedwyn the d/o William & Jone.

and a possible marriage for the parents;

William Chapman to Joan Ratten in 1714 Trowbridge which again is from the LDS but as a VR entry and no date.

My concern is that Trowbridge is some distance from Great Bedwyn.
