Oh that looks very promising - I think Suzie should have a good look at that.

As Gadget has already pointed out Ulathbeck should read St Cuthberts -

Quote
and 5 boarders all b. St Cuthberts:
Mary Rae,  12
William Sutherland, 12
George Sutherland, 10
Mary Affleck, 10
Jessie Trotter, 8

ev

Just to confirm for all to see - here's the original.  Mary is second from bottom.

Now THAT looks very interesting. Right time frame and right Mother.
Thank you very much indeed. I'll investigate straight away.

Sorry to ask another question but... re that unnamed illegitimate female birth on 20th November 1861 at the Royal Maternity Hospital Edinburgh to an Agnes Affleck of Greenside Place and advised by the Matron, where did you find that?

Please can you tell me so that I can look at, and name, the source. That would be really helpful.

Suzie

Hi Folks,

if it is not going against the strain I have attached a section of an old 1853 map of Newton Village the arrow in red pointing to it, it looks just like a Hamlet with Newton House next to it, if any of them worked at the Coal Pit owned by Edmonston I feel sorry for them.

I have put this on in case Suzie ever wants to visit the area, if you do Suzie it is about half a mile past JEWSON builder suppliers and on the right a beautiful area but perhaps not for them..

Rgards.

Archie

Une and Archie.

Thanks to you both for your input: the map was good and the source of Mary's birth excellent.
Many thanks to you both - and indeed to everyone else on this topic. If the sisters for whom I am doing this basic research want more, then they can do that better in Edinburgh than I can from Orkney.

My feeling is that I can put this one to bed now.

I've been looking for Agnes Affleck  (on censuses and BMDs)since I found her name on her daughter's death cert a few days ago. The only one that keeps popping back up is this one on the 1861 in Bo'ness. Others are already married  or too young/old.

An Agnes Smith Affleck, infant teacher in Bo'ness, aged 26.

By 1871 she is living with her brother in St Cuthbert:

12 Claremont Place, North Side, St Cuthbert
James Ormiston Affleck, unm, 30, MD (Edinburgh), FRCS, b. Midlothian
Agnes Smith Affleck, unm, 36, b. do

...and the same place in 1881 - both down as b. Edinburgh. By 1891 they are at 38 Heriot Row, Edinburgh, James described as Physician (Reg).

In 1851 she appears to be a visitor at 38 Brunswick Street, St Cuthbert in the household of Agnes Cumming. She is aged 16 and described as a Female Teacher, b. Edinburgh.

Going back to the 1841, this looks like the family:

40 Brunswick St., St Cuthbert

John Affleck, 45, Wright, b. Scotland
Agnes, 35
Robert, 10
Agnes, 7
William, 7
James, 10 mths
Agnes, snr, and children born Midlothian

This might well not be her but a story could be developed that Agnes, unmarried teacher in Bo'ness became pregnant and her brother arranged for her to be admittted to the Royal Maternity Hospital for the birth. She then returned to act as housekeeper to her brother and the baby was left to be boarded out.

I can't find much on the Royal Maternity Hospital but I knew of it from when I worked with obstetric  records in Aberdeen. It would be worth trying to track down some info on it's history. Hallo Gadget,

So the Mary Affleck saga goes on!!  Many thanks for all that. I will peruse and investigate what you have proposed. It might also help me concentrate the mind to search for that Frederick DUNN whom daughter Mary named as her father - actually her stepfather - in 1900 on her 2nd marriage cert.

Thanks again.
Suzie
