1900 American Census look-up please
« on: Wednesday 15 June 05 12:58 BST (UK) »
Would appreciate a look-up in 1900, please for  :

Emily Martin aged 47 born in Westminster London

Husband George 51 / sons Frank 14 / George W 19  /  Emily M 21

Not sure where Emily would be, but told some of the family went to Chicago.

I checked on ellisisland site - an Emily Martin 43, went over in 1896 and this fits mine but viewing the original page they have the wrong page showing.

Thank you
Reyz

On the 1900 US census I have found an Emily R Martin with a dob 27/11/1852 been married to George dob 27/09/1852 for 14 years - They moved to America in April 1896. It doesn't seem to fully match yours due to George's age and the fact it shows Emily had no children.

You said you that the wrong page is coming up on the Ellis Island website, I wanted to point out there is a way, although a little tedious, to find the correct page.

Go to the website www.stephenmorse.com.  Under Ellis Island Search Forms and Ship Arrivals there is a link for Manifests (aka Missing Manifests).  With this, you can enter the date of arrival and it will take you to the correct microfilm roll.  You have to find the correct "Frame" number, which is a process of trial and error (the tedious part).  You can just change the number in the frame box to bring up a different page, or use the + and - buttons for frames.

The manifests should be in chronological order, unfortunately, not all have the pages have date on them, so you may have to search around a bit to find a page with a date.

Good Luck.

Hi Amy

I shall certainly try that.
Many thanks for taking the time to let me know, much appreciated.
Good luck too.

Update  : I found her with a  husband George same age, his age varies  in what I have found for him. They were going to Hancock. Though of course they may be the ones that Gillj found for me on the 1900 Census, so maybe not mine.  It all helps with process of elimination though, for which I am grateful.
A Miss Ada Martin 26 as well going to New York, not sure she was connected to them.  Interesting though, and it has given me something to think about.

Thank you again for your help. Rz
