I Can't find my GG Grandfather on the 1911 Census.
« on: Tuesday 10 September 13 11:30 BST (UK) »
I have found my Great Grandfather Andrew Munn 16y on the 1911 census along with his siblings

James Munn Head 22y single Butchers Shop Assistant
Margaret Munn Sister 23y
Andrew Munn Brother 16y
Jessie Munn Sister 14y
William Munn Brother 9y
18, Scott St, Clydebank.

I have found their older brother John Munn with his wife and daughter.
John Munn Head 26y
Cecilia Wife 37y
Cecilia Daughter 1y
Glasgow.

and their other brother Daniel Munn with his wife and daughter.
Daniel Munn Head 27y
Annie Wife 21y
Annie Daughter 6 months.

But I can find their father James Munn born 1860 Old Kilpatrick. Their mother died in 1906, so where was James? He died in 1945, and is buried in Lochgilphead.

Any ideas?

Thank you

Hi
On www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

In the 1911 census there is only 1 James Munn age range 50-52 in the whole of Scotland

Have you disregarded this one

Yours Aye

The census is only a record of where a person was on the given days at a given time.

You say he was still alive until 1945

so you have a few more options:

was he at work or working away when the census happened
was he visiting someone when the census happened (in or out of the parish)
(do a random name check on the census)
If he still doesn't show up check the spelling of similar men - the person writing would probably spell the name as it sounded to them ie man, mann, men, Menn, minn, monn.
with some dialects the vowels came sound different
and all else fails check the north of england

hope that helps

Hi BruceL

I viewed it on SP. It's for......... GOVAN, GLASGOW....

James Munn Head 52
Helen           Wife  52
Jane             Dau  25 single
???               Son  18 single
Richard         Grandson   1 1/2
James McDonald  Boarder 28 single

I've no idea where James is? He's not with his other two sons either  :-\ his other son Walter is missing too.

Hi Terianne,

I have found on of my Munn's as a Mann, so will check out that option, and Mun. Thank you for your advice, will try England too.

No James Mun, and 8 James Mann aged 50-52. Will need to get some more credits, but will check England first.

I know it can get expensive to play hutches because with SP there is sometimes clues.

I take it you have the list of 8 james mann's - check if any a close in location to the ones you know
Try and workout James age to the nearest year - pick the nearest match - you never know you might hit lucky, but you seems to have a lot of info, apart for solving a query it not a major problem.

Don't forget to check under initials only since people in institutions (hospitals, workhouses, gaols, etc.) are listed that way.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I haven't bought any new credits yet but there are 4 x J Munn, 18 x J Mann, and 8 x James Mann, and that's without looking for his other Walter.

I am also wondering if he went to New Jersey for a while because Jessie Munn went there about 1921, and William Munn 1922 where they both married and stayed.
