A quick google search would suggest he was born in Northern England or Scotland.  Has there are no suitable matches or rather matches that jump out I would ask someone with a sub to the scottish people site to have a look there in the OPR's

On the 1901 census he lists his birthplace as Oldham and the year of birth would suggest 1864.  A search of FreeBMD using these details gives a Thomas Garside born in Oldham reg District Dec 1863 in Oldham.  These would fit his census entry.  Has an educated man, and a teacher of Mathmatics I would expect his ability to count be better than the average man at this time and therefore I would probably order this certficate or check a baptism record

There is a ships record for him entering Canada where he gave his age as 49 and therefore a year of birth as 1872.  He travelled with a lady some 18 years his junior who is given as Hather.  His destination was a town in British Columbia and his occupation was a journalist.  he had been to Canada before in 1890

Yes and there are others with birth certs on as well with different parents.  None of which fit as the birth dates are not correct or place of birth doesnt match what is known from his own biography

His biography says 1863 has his birth year as well.  I just find it funny that all the trees on Ancestry list the same parents yet there are 2 different birth certs and one with clearly different parents names than what the poster as put in his tree.
