Ellis family, Anglesey
« on: Sunday 15 September 13 11:54 BST (UK) »

I am trying to trace back and find the relationship of William and Ellen Newton to my grandmother.  William Thomas Newton was one of the executors of my grandmothers will in 1933, he was married to Ellen, nee Williams.  They were living in Bairnsdale, Victoria at the time.  I also have a photo with 'from your loving cousin Bert Newton' written on the back ( Herbert James Newton), their son.  Ellen seems to be the daughter of David and Grace Williams (nee Ellis).
If I am on the right track then Grace is the sister of my great great grandmother Margaret Ellis, but she  married an Owen Williams, so the relationship could be there.
Margaret was born in Anglesey Wales about 1829 and arrived in Australia with her husband in 1857.  From her death certificate her parents were John and Jane Ellis (nee Jones).  I have found one  1841 census that fits, but can find no more references to the family.  Can anyone suggest where else to look?  Thanking you.

Hi Gaylene, I am not sure if this helps or not

From www.freereg.org Beaumaris Parish Church Anglesey Margaret Ellis daughter of John Ellis and Jane, baptised 8 Jun 1829. No other children appear to have been baptised with those parents in Beaumaris but the parish church transcriptions only range from 1813 - 1848. Some possibles for a Grace Ellis in Anglesey

Beaumaris 15 Oct 1826 with parents Peter & Elizabeth
Amlwch  20 Nov 1813 shows father's surname of Ellis (www.familysearch.org has parents as Hugh Ellis and Jane)
Llaneilian 30 Au 1818 parents John Ellis and Ellen (from familysearch)

Hi keyboard86 and shirl100,

Thank you for taking the time to try to sort out my ancestors.

I have gleaned this information from the death certificates here in Aus.

Margaret Williams (my great great grandmother) died 1915 aged 86 years, daughter of John Ellis and Jane Jones.  On her marriage certificate John Ellis farmer is listed as her father.

Grace Williams died 1882 aged about 44 years daughter of John Ellis and Jane Jones.  Mother-in-law of executor of my grandmothers will William Thomas Newton.

I know death certificates can be unreliable which is why I am trying to confirm the relationship.

On the Williams side my great great grandfather Owen Williams died 1910 aged about 83 father Thomas Williams, mother unknown Jones,  but on the marriage certificate had William Williams.

David Williams died 1923 aged 89 son of David Williams and Eleanor Price.

Williams somewhere in Wales - he kept moving
Ellis - Anglesey

Hi again, have you ever traced when Grace came to Australia, ie were they both married to Williams, prior to arrival in Australia?

If not may be beneficial posting on the Australian board, and working backwards? !

PS Who was Margaret's husband, and if arrival in 1857 where was she in 1851?

Hi again keyboard86,
Once they hit Australian shores I know where they were.  Mainly from the birth of their children.
Margaret Ellis married Owen Williams on 9th August 1853 in Bangor Cathedral Church.  They arrived in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia on the Herald of the Morning in March 1857.  They took up land in Bairnsdale area about 120 miles from Melbourne.
I believe Grace Ellis arrived on the Telegraph in July 1859 and married David Williams in Victoria in 1864.  David Williams arrived in 1857 on the Titan.  They also lived in the Bairnsdale area.

As for where Margaret was in 1851, your guess is as good as mine.  I cannot confirm any of them in 1851.  This is my problem.

? No children 1853/7

Yes keyboard 86 that is the one.  At this stage I believe Owens first wife may have been an Elizabeth.  I presume she died.  You did well trying to decipher where Margaret was living.

All their children were born out here.

Jane born 6th October 1860,
Owen born13th April 1862
Grace born 30th May 1864
William John born 18th December 1868

Vincent - Illogan/Redruth, Cornwall.  Moved to Sculcoates, Yorkshire; Grass Valley, California; Timaru, New Zealand and Victoria, Australia.
Williams somewhere in Wales - he kept moving
Ellis - Anglesey

Obvious question therefore,  was Owen from 1853 to departure to Australia in ie the Army?
7 years before they decided to have any children?
Who was Margaret with if above a possibility?
