comments on a marriage or baptismal certificate
« on: Sunday 15 September 13 14:00 BST (UK) »
Hi, can anyone tell me what information would have been recorded in the ledger, when either a couple marrying, or a child was baptised in the catholic church in 1868, to state that either bride or groom, or (mother or father) was of a different religion.

What promotes my question is, that my mother born in Scotland in 1907, into  a strong irish catholic community, that when she died in 1997 the priest could tell me that one of her parents was not catholic, as this information had been written in the margin beside the information of her baptism.
I wondered if this was an irish procedure within the catholic church, or if any reseachers had experienced this before.

many thanks

ringading.

I suspect it might have been up to the individual priest as I have seen two or 3 baptisms for children of a mixed marriage where there was no such notation in the register.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I've seen a marriage record where two known Roman Catholics married in a Church of Ireland parish.

I have a marriage record where the priest who married the couple states that the grooms mother was a protestant.  I would suggest it would have been quite usual for the priest to record the fact, particularly in the case of a child's baptism.

Hi all,

Thank you for all your replies, but out of curiosity, in your experience of finding such statements recorded on certificates, was it actually on the certificate or within the ledger entry pertaining to the marriage or baptism.

To clarify, in my case, we only  became aware of this entry, when organising my mothers funeral, the parish priest went directly to the original baptism entry in the ledger to qualify my mother had been baptised at this church, and low and behold it was written in the margin of the ledger, that her parents were from different religions.

Once again, thank you very much for your interest in this.
