John Pierpoint
« on: Tuesday 17 September 13 10:09 BST (UK) »
John Pierpoint's date of birth is March 4th 1798 (his own record) and his place of birth, Betchton (this is consistent throughout the census records). However, despite being able to trace his life  through to his death and burial in 1882 (I even have a copy of his will) I cannot find his baptism and therefore his parents. If he was born in Betchton I would have thought that he would have been baptised in St. Mary's, Sandbach.
It has been suggested that the family may have originated from Staffordshire, but there is no evidence for this and I cannot find a suitable baptism on Family Search, but if he records his birth as Betchton then I would have thought that he would have been baptised in the local area.
Please, please, please can anyone help me to break down this brick wall.

Maybe he wasn't christened.

Did he have siblings? Were they christened in Betchton? If they are younger, and if they were chr there, then maybe John, as eldest, was taken back to mother's home church for his christrening - I have seen that. Where were his parents married?

Modified to add - sorry, just re-read and you dont know his parents. So presumably no likely Pierpoint marriages in Betchton. Looks like you need to systematically work round all neighbouring parishes, and hope Mrs P didnt come from too far away.

Does he name any of his children William or Ann?

Have you checked all the Church Hulme records as St Lukes was an ancient Chapel to Sandbach?

Heather

It is possible that he wasn't christened lizdb. If not I am totally stumped. The parish church for Betchton at this time was St. Mary's Sandbach.

Hi heatherjulie
I live too far away from any record office/archives which may hold relevant records. I believe that a relative searched at Chester Archives many years ago without success, but I do not know which parishes she looked at.
I have only been able to look on Family Search and Ancestry, but have not found anything. John married Mary Skellern (or various spellings of the name) at St. Mary's, Sandbach and they had 7 children: Sarah (born before Mary was married, father unknown although John acknowledged her as a daughter in his will), Samuel, William, Mary, John, James and George. I can trace the family after John's marriage, but I am brickwalled at his parentage. I have no idea as to his parents or whether he had any siblings.
Thank you for your suggestions.

There is a marriage licence issued 16 Sept 1795 for James Pierpoint of Brereton, farmer and Betty Kennerley of Church Hulme (Holmes Chapel). Both were age 21 or over and Betty was a widow. The original is difficult to read as it is torn. The marriage itself doesn't appear to be online but this would be a possible match for parents of John.

Now found baptisms for sons of James & Elizabeth Pierpoint at Church Hulme
12 Jan 1797  John
22 Mar 1798  Richard (James & Elizabeth of Cranage)

so if your John was born 1798 this is not his family.  Sorry!
