People mentioned in the probate indexes are executors of his will.
They can sometimes be a bank or solicitor and may not even be beneficiaries of the actual money.
As Liz says probably worth getting a copy of the will, costs £6 from...

From Kelly's directories to hand, mainly at www.historicaldirectories.org:-

1874-1887 Kent, Samuel Hamer, tailor, also Samuel Hamer & Co, outfitters, 63 High St
1890-1903 Kent, James Redman, tailor
1904-1907 London Suburbs, John Jukes Bowkett, tailor
1911-1917 London Suburbs, Bowkett & Anson, tailors

Earlier directories didn't give full addresses and the above site ends at 1917.

You might enquire on the Sydenham Town Forum at http://sydenham.org.uk/forum/viewforum.php?f=10 where the local historian lurks. He has a lot of old photographs but he doesn't seem to be as active nowadays as he was in the past. You could also ask about photographs at Lewisham Local Studies (where he used to work).
Researching Penge, Anerley, (incuding the Crystal Palace) and neighbouring parts of Beckenham, currently in London (Bromley), formerly Surrey and/or Kent.

Btw, I did just check the marriage indexes to check of CecilBernard Lane, the dentist was his son in lw (ie married to Kathleen or Fannie), but he wasnt, his wife was something else.  I have found that in the past - an unknown name as executor turns out to be a son-in-law.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Hi Chris,

Thanks I googled Sydenham yesterday and found a local history site and sent them a mail. Waiting to see if they reply.

Now I know he was at shop for at least 13 years!
