Cando - amazing information - I went to work to come home and find this message. I am envious of your time and talent to research

I am assuming SLV means State Library of Victoria - does your suggestion mean that they hold copies of old newspapers

I don't often get to Melbourne but will try to organise a trip after Christmas when I will have some time off in January

Of course very valuable information but I feel like I am 20 years too late, and still no clue on the elusive Mary (Mrs Hannett) - as you said, maybe something will come out of the death notices

Regards and thanks so much, regards ............... Alison

Alison the State Library of Vic [apologies for not typing the full name] hold copies of The Argus, The Age and the Herald Sun and of course the The Sun.  Doesn't take long to find the info, simply knowing where to check.

You could try the Ask a Librarian service to copy the notices but recently I received a refusal from the Ask a Librarian Service in Western Australia.  Hopefully our State Library will be more helpful.  I have always had wonderful service from SLV.  Scroll down to the email enquiry form.

I will continue to search for Mary HANNETT but to date have found nothing.  Possibilities include a defacto relationship, living in South Australia -no online electoral rolls, or even living overseas.   I am hopeful that some of the later death notices will mention her.

Cheers
Cando

The SLV kindly forwarded me a copy of 5 February 1986 The Sun death notice
FORD - Euphemia Margaret
Loved sister of Mary, aunt of Dian and Peter
Remebered with love always
Dian

Unfortunately this is interesting but no real clue to further information - no location or surnames, but still nice to have. Maybe a funeral notice might give some clues to location but will have to wait until I can get to Melbourne. Euphemia cremated and scattered at Springvale Cemetery. Still looking for Mary Hannett (nee Sheppard) - was hoping to be able to locate in 1980 electoral rolls which is why I was looking for a location from funeral notice from her half-sister Euphemia

At least the trail is not cold ................. Alison

Don't remember where I found the following information but seem to think that Dian Hannett (daughter of Mary Hannett (nee Sheppard)) married Robert James Mair (painter) and in 1980 at 500 Scoresby Road, Knoxfield

Had some luck this morning
Found Mary Jane Sheppard married 1946 to Teddie Spark
Found Mary Jane Spark on her own at 15 Abbotsford Street, North Melbourne - this was the home of her mother Maggie (second wife to Alfred Sheppard) - this confirms that it is our Mary Jane
Also found Mary Jane Spark married Ronald George Hannant - note the spelling    A not E
Haven't found a death although I have found Ronald remarried
So still looking for death and burial of Mary Jane ?????

from Victoria BMD

Death 12527/1989
HANNANT, Mary Jane, aged 62
Mother: Sheppard, Maggie nee Crawford
Father: Sheppard, Alfred
Place of birth: North Melbourne
Spouse at Marriage: <Unknown Family Name>, Edward Spark
My comment: seems to be some confusion re her spouse's name, as if the informant did not have (or did not wish to reveal) the details. I have transcribed the spouse details exactly as shown on the index.

Mary Jane Hannant was cremated at Springvale
Born 17 November 1926
Died 22 May 1989
Date of service 25 May 1989
Cremated

Edit to add: This is not Mary Jane's partner - see next post.

There is another HANNANT cremation at Springvale

George John HANNANT, died 16 January 1981
Date of service: 23 January 1981
Cremated remains scattered.

And this is the Victorian BMD index death entry for this man:
!989 #1961
HANNANT, George John, age 75
Mother's or Spouse's name: <Unknown Family Name>, Elizabeth
Mother's name at birth: HANNANT
Father's name: UNKNOWN
Place of death: Melbourne East

Could it be Ronald George? May not be involved at all - you may be able to track down a death notice for this chap.

I found a death notice in newspaper for Ronald George Hannant who died 2013 and it mentions Dian and Peter as children and I have previously confirmed these children's names as belonging to Mary Jane Sheppard but I am now not sure if RGH is the father or step-father as I found MJS married to Teddie Spark prior to marrying RGH ..........
