Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford
« on: Thursday 26 September 13 18:15 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

Seems like a very long shot. about 70 years ago, my grandfathers sister was visited by someone with rolls of paper, saying that she was related to Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford.
I have been right across my paternal line, which is the link. any ideas were to look next.

Hi,
Have you read "Black Diamonds" by Catherine Bailey? It is an excellent book that charts the rise and fall of the Fitzwilliam family of Wentworth. Even if you don't find proof of a link to the family, it may provide good back ground material. :)

Hi,
Most of the surviving Wentworth woodhouse records are at Sheffield Archives, although the family  destroyed tens of thousands of documents in the 1970's on the estate, the fire went on for 3 days apparently.

Weren't there two Wentworths, rather in competition with each other? That way didn't they end up with Wentworth Woodhouse and Wentworth Castle? I'd guess Sheffield Archives unless either of the above have records.
