this can be the only way that my ancestors Charles an Margaret could have taken on john as their son if the church knew that they had had a son that died and they had a child
 whose mother had died then it would have been the simplest of things to agree with the couple that they would be allowed to bring him up as theirs

The Church of Scotland was the main authority responsible for the administration of Poor relief in Scotland until 1845. Edinburgh had at least 2 Poorhouses from the early 1600's onwards.

A family could take on a child without any authority (Church or otherwise) being involved.
