Bishop - Chippenham

On 6th March 1854 my 2nd great Grandfather Henry Bishop was sentenced to 3 months imprisonment at Wiltshire Assizes for two counts of theft from dwelling house. the offences were committed at the house of Thomas Bishop ,his uncle, in Chippenham.
At the time of the offences Henry was a soldier in the 47th regiment of foot. He had joined the army in 1851 having previously been an apprentice to his uncle Thomas Bishop a cabinet maker. Thomas Bishop was born in 1851 at Calne.
Any information about the crimes and/or information about Thomas Bishop would be appreciated.

Hi - I've had a look at old newspaper records,& have found Henry Bishop committed for trial at

Westbury 16th Feb 1854 for stealing £20 from the house of C.E. Jerry & stealing one silver watch

from the house of Francis Skurrey. There's also a case in 1853 citing Bishop v Badland, re a dispute

over a medal, which was referred to the War Office.

I'll go back & plough through some more!

"Henry Bishop(s) pleaded guilty to an indictment charging him with stealing £20 from the

dwellinghouse of Edwin Charles Jay at Chippenham. The prisoner pleaded guilty to a charge of

stealing a watch,£5,and other property from the dwellinghouse of Francis M'Swiney at

Chippenham."

Sentence  - 3 calendar months.

Many thanks for that information Everlea. I was under impresion that the offences were carried out at Thomas Bishop's house. I would like any information that you could find out about Thomas Bishop if possible please. Where did he carry out trade from/live etc?

Yes, I noticed the address difference. Since my last post I've found ref to Henry Bishop being

attacked & beaten in 1849 (a victim for once?) & could your Henry have been an Asst Surgeon in

the Royal Wilts Militia in 1855 ?

Thomas has proved more problematic as there are more of that name in the time period, with no

indication of trade. Have I got this right - you say Thomas was b 1851,but he was Henry's uncle?

And Henry was being a Very Naughty Boy in the 1850s when his uncle was not yet ten & yet

H was T's apprentice?

Sorry everlea, my mistake Thomas was born in 1815. Thomas's occupation was Cabinet Maker. His wife was Elizabeth. Henry joined the army in 1851 he was a corporal in the crimea. They had him back in the army after he finished his sentance.

There's a Thomas Bishop b 1808 Calne wife Elizabeth, but in 1841/51 he's a hairdresser!

I'll try & have a deeper delve later.

were you aware his service record is available from find my past you can buy credits quite  cheaply to download it , it has 12 pages and he had a good career once the civil action was done with.
