Viaduct Road, Brighton?
« on: Tuesday 01 October 13 09:50 BST (UK) »
Hi folks, I am wondering when this was built?

I thought to start with that Viaduct Terrace had just "become" Viaduct Road some when between 1871 and 1875/7 (have map with road on from then). This might still be the case i guess but some houses still remain of Viaduct Terrace to this day! :S So i am a little confused.

I have been trolling around the net hoping for a map from between 1871 and 1875/7 to see if i can find when it happened and IF some of the Viaduct terrace houses were renumbered into Viaduct Road. I am wondering if number 7 was one if that was the case.

I anyone is looking at old Brighton maps perhaps they could take a look for me?

Cheers Deb x

Viaduct Road was formerly part of a much longer road called Montpelier Road East.  I believe it was given its present name in 1873.  Tim Carder's Brighton Encyclopedia suggests Viaduct Terrace itself dates from the 1860s and notes that numbers 10-32 are on the council's list of buildings of special interest.   Roy G

http://old-maps.co.uk/index.html

click on link and enter co-ordinates   531306  105404
when all maps loaded, click on 1877 Town Plans
when loaded in main window, click on to "zoom"
shows both "Terrace" and "Road"

ok so that map would appear to suggest that the road was called "Road" and the southern houses "Terrace" with the northern houses being "Windsor Terrace" :P

the plot thickens.. :P
