Hello I have a mystery in my family.  Our grandmother Frances was born 1871-73 in Karlovac.  Her parents are Mich (Micheal) and Mary Lucas.  I can't find any information on them coming to the United States.  I know she travelled to the United States before 1890 when she married Johann (John) Sedlar (Sadler) in Calumet Houghton Michigan.

I can't find prior information on Grandmother before 1890.  I have lots of information after her marriage.

My father use to say she was from Royalty??

Any information would be appreciated.

First of all, where is Karlovac? many European boundaries changed as the result of wars and treaties but a location would help to search for more detail such as port of embarkation.

If the family settled in Michigan it's quite possible they first arrived in Canada and then travelled to the U.S. Several U.S. census records ask for date of arrival in U.S. (which may not be when they left their home country).

Family stories are often a bit like the game Chinese Whispers were the original statement is nothing like the end result. To find royal (or any other ancestor) you need to trace each ancestor's lineage back step by step. It may be that someone in the family worked for a member of the nobility, lived near a castle or that there was a supposed royal ancestor so far back in time that you'll not be able to find proof.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Karlovac is in Croatia!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karlovac
https://maps.google.at/maps?q=karlovac&ie=UTF-8&ei=9pFVUvaKE4HGtQaqr4DgAg&sqi=2&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAg

Sedlar is a name to find in Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia(Serbia has nearly 200 results in phonebook).
but also to find in Czech area and so on.
means saddler (upholsterer).
slovenian phonebook has for this name 51 hits private and 8 for business.
Croatia has 434 hits which also include Sedlaric (nearly 100 of all).
-ic is typically ending and means "son of".

do you mean royality or nobility? so if, then would guess more for nobility.....
WHICH noble-name was it? maybe to find at sites for old Austrian-Hungarian nobility.
at some special families definitly info to find WITHOUT family-search. with some luck. ;)
i can look at some special austrian links if they are listed at Croatian nobility (Crownland Croatia).
Lucas is not to find, which also not typically croatian, guess was Lukac.
but similar would be nobility of:
Lukachevich (Lukacevic)
Lukavchich (Lukavcic)
Lukacsich (Lukacic)
Luketich (Luketic)
Lukich (Lukic I)
Lukich (Lukic II)
Lukinich (Lukinic)
Lusanecz (Lusanec)

Thanks everyone for the response.  My grandfather John Sadler (Sedlar) was from Slovenia and my grandmother Frances was reported to have immigrated in 1889 but according to my father she immigrated around 1879.  She was born in Karlovac and may have had another name besides Frances, also maybe her family went to Canada first.  I cant seem to find though. Lukas is probably her mothers last name I will check the suggestions for possible nobility names.

Would love to find her birth records in Karlovac and the Gasparovitsch (etc) family immigration information.  They were Roman Catholic if that is helpful

or for special place - write simple in Karlovac and click on Trazi and you get 2 results.
(i never searched there....), then click on image and slike (pictures) then you are at the book.
but not easy as language-problem think.
http://arhinet.arhiv.hr/_Generated/Pages/MaticneKnjige.PublicBrowse.aspx

or you write to parish-church: http://www.croatian-genealogy.com/cro-parishes/a-list.shtml
but Karlovac has some churches and possibel also language-problem:
