Probate for WW1 Soldier
« on: Sunday 06 October 13 18:23 BST (UK) »
Hi
In the probate records book it says that Dennis Davies died in the hands of germans. Is this likely to be literally, as in a prisoner of war, or is it likely to be a generic term/typo as he died at Flanders in 1916?

Thanks

If he is the the man 6th Bat, South Staffs died 3rd July 1916 ?
If so it does say he was 'a prisoner'
Is this him also on CWGC ?

Hi bcd
I'm looking at The National Probate Calendar 1858-1966
It says he died "3 July 1916 a prisoner in the hands of the Germans"
hope that helps

He was buried by the Germans. From the Commonwealth War Graves Commission referencing the cemetery at Ervillers. "Two cemeteries were made by the Germans at Ervillers. The first, which is the present Military Cemetery, contained the graves of some Commonwealth prisoners".
