William Cole m. Sarah ?Gosling 1825 London
« on: Tuesday 08 October 13 01:13 BST (UK) »
Looking for the marriage record of William Cole to Sarah Gosling or Gorlin 1825 London possibly Blackheath where Sarah was born. Would like to know if Sarah's parents are listed.

William and Sarah's first child was Richard Thomas William Cole b. 16 Sept 1826. William and Sarah were living at Newgate Street (possible help for the parish?). William was listed as a book seller. According to a county history over here in the US William was born in Coventry and moved to London with his parents. He read law starting at 16 and began practicing when he was 21. He also started a shipping gazette and controlled it until 1841 when he sold out to move to America. Is there any way to find out more about William reading law or the gazette he owned?

Any help is appreciated.

IN 1825 there will be no note of who the parents(father)'s were. Just the bride and groom's names and usually 2 witnesses. They may be from either side or just friends, you will not know for sure.

Father's names were not included on marriage certs till Sept 1837.

Good Morning
1841 census Dudley St St Mary's Islington
William Cole 45 solicitor n
Sarah 35 n
Richard 14 n
William 12 n
Charles 10 y
Alfred 8 y
Mary 13 n
Sarah 5 y
Cecilia 1 y
There are on a passenger list 9.10.1841 with looks like parents Richard Cole 77 farmer and Sarah 73 wife(William age 49 down as Thomas lawyer and Sarah 35).The ship is Hendrick Hudson Liverpool to New York.
There's an indenture of clerkship for William Cole son  of Richard Cole warehouseman of Wood St to Thomas Mason and Edward Denton of the King's bench attorneys  ,in Foster Lane.(first son Richard Thomas Cole was baptised St Leonard's Foster Lane)on the 10th   February 1808.He was to serve 5 years ,but for some reason all this is recorded in September 1810 so presumably it had been planned for some time.
Will see if I can find more

There is a possible baptism at Coventry Holy Trinity to Richard and Sarah Cole 13.2.1792.

There is a record of Articles of Clerkship in 1810, whereby William Cole, son of Richard Cole, of Cheapside, does agree to serve his Articles to Edward Denton "that the said William Cole should faithfully and diligently serve the said Edward Denton after the manner of a clerk in the practice and profession that the said Edward Denton then used of an Attorney in his Majesty's Court of Coomon Pleas at Westminster and as an Attorney and Solicitor in other courts..."

There seems to be a gravestone for the William and Sarah  in the USA with birth dates 11th February .1792 and 18th April 1808 Racine Wisconsin.
Also a Richard Cole married a Sarah Jordon at St Michaels Coventry 17th April 1791 which would fit with grandson's Charles Jordon Cole born  28.5.1829 and baptised at Christ Church 5.9.1832.
The couple  seem to be living in Shoreditch in 1841 Richard 75 independent  and Sarah 75 not born Middlesex in Nicholas St.
William Cole printer age 46 no 10 Crane St ,Fleet St recieved the Freedom of the City of London  1.5.1838 .His father Richard Cole was of St Nicholas St gentleman .

Hi

Wonder if this is the marriage

William Cole marr. Sarah GOSLING 30 May 1830 Saint Luke,Old Charlton,Kent,England.

claire

Well Richard Thomas William Cole, the first child was born in 1826 and the second child, William Henry in 1829, so probably not unless they "lived in sin" for about 5 years before they got married.

If the 18 Apr 1808 birth date is correct for Sarah she would have been 17 years younger than William and only 17 with the 1825 marriage date. Is it possible she was a servant he got pregnant and finally married after two children? If the 1830 marriage is the correct one a third child was born 9 months later.

Intriguing to say the least.
