Hi,
Thanks for that.
The death cert 1915 for Janet Dalgliesh (nee Anderson) gives her parents as James Anderson and Helen Rutherford.
This links in with info sent to me by an Ian Davidson which shows:-
James Anderson (born 1836) as farming at Broadgairhill where his father, John (born c 1790, married Margaret Burnett) also farmed.
John's father was another John (born c 1752 and married Helen Laidlaw)
His father was Robert (married Janet Grieve) tenant at Midgehop.
As you can see they all seem firmly rooted around Ettrick valley.
As far as my lot of Andersons goes:-
My fathers aunts and uncles were some of the 13 children of John Anderson (born 1852, married to Agnes Dinwoodie).
John's father was William Anderson (born 1800, married Esther Dinwoodie)
Both of these and the aunts and uncles were all born and lived in Kirkpatrick Juxta at Wester Earshaig and Stidriggs. The aunts and uncle (Mary, Esther and Sam) also lived at Granton north of Moffat in that parish (from where they cycled!)
William's father was Thomas Anderson (born c 1760, married Catherine Marchbank). He was described as a miller at Archbank nr Moffat when his first child was born. He subsequently farmed at Wester Earshaig.
I couldn't find a birth record for him in Moffat or KJ and unfortunately he died in 1838 so no census record.
The most hopeful birth I could find was from Eskdalemuir with a father called James (which would fit with naming patterns as Thomas' 1st son was called James)
As Eskdalemuir is not so far from Ettrick maybe there is a link there. I would love also to pin Thomas's birth down!
So there you are. All the info on my Andersons is backed up with census, births etc. I'm not sure where to go next and the thought of following up all those generations of siblings and their children is rather daunting!
I shan't commit to the cd of the churchyard just yet as I'm still unsure if there is a relationship with the older Ettrick Andersons...
Do feel free to ignore all that info if I've overdone it!
cheers
Norma
