JAMES CHARLES SIMPSON - SCOTLAND TO VICTORIA? LATE 1800's
« on: Wednesday 16 October 13 14:53 BST (UK) »
I am trying to get started on chasing a James Charles Simpson who married Eliza ? in or around Peterhead, Aberdeenshire - came to Australia and their son was born Melbourne (1871 Scot Census says 1856) a relative says closer to 1861. Eliza and James Jr went back to UK after James Sr died. So must be somewhere between 1856 and 1870 seeing that Mum and son are in the 1871 Scot Census living at 26, Queen Street, Peterhead. Any direction will be greatly appreciated. I cannot find them on any shipping list. I am sorry I cannot provide much else at this stage. Robert

Bob
Am I correct in guessing the information you are giving us is "family oral history"?

There is nothing showing on the indexes for a death of JAMES CHARLES SIMPSON in Victoria, though there are deaths for James SIMPSON. Not knowing parental names makes it hard.

Is Victoria where the death supposedly happened?

Likewise I see no trace of a likely birth for a child named James to James and Eliza?...  SIMPSON, but it may have preceded civil registration.

If you were able to offer Eliza?...'s maiden name, it may help.

Sue, thank you for your message.
I have found (needs to be verified) a James and Mrs Eliza Simpson Passport Application UK - middle 1855. Oral history yes except for an 1871 Scot Census with Eliza widow (53) and son 16 at Peterhead Scotland -
SIMPSON, Eliza   Head   Widow   F   53   1818    Lodgins Keeper   Peterhead, Aberdeenshire
N/A
SIMPSON, James C   Son      M   16   1855      Australia

Address: 26, Queen Street, Peterhead

I am told that when James Sr died his wife and son (Eliza and James) returned home. So James Sr died post 1856? arrival in Australia and returned pre-1871. CAnnot find Eliza and James in 1861 Census although they do pop up in 1881 in England apparently running a boy's boarding school.

I am sorry to say I have not been able to 'nail' Eliza Simpson's maiden name to date or when married.
