Edmund Patten Mystery

Hi all,

I would be grateful for any help in solving the following mystery.

I have just discovered an Edmd. Patten in the 1861 Census in his brother's Household at 16a Providence Row, St. Luke.

RG09-208-85
He is entered as a Boot Maker born 1839 in Haversham Common ( the word Bucks is in brackets and seems to have been added later)

According to my records there is no Edmund in the family and I could find no reference to any Birth, marriage, death or any other census records.

He is listed as brother, but the householder and his six known siblings were all born in Bocking or Braintree Essex......quite a jump to Bucks for one child!

Any help appreciated.

Looking at the 1861 image there is a squiggle in the relationship to head column which could indicate that he was a brother as the person above is listed, but may just be that the enumerator didn't know the relationship. 

As Edmund and Edward were often interchangeable he may be listed in other years as Edward

Edit - I also wonder whether his birthplace is actually Amersham Common? There is a line in front of the word (as with Essex above) which may have altered the A to an H

I think you may be right about Amersham.....Good idea about it possibly being Edward, but we don't have an edward in the family either.

I shall keep digging today.

Could he be the brother George?
Cant find him as George anywhere, maybe he used the name Edmund?

I have brother George living elsewhere in St. Luke......and always used George (he did not have a second christian name).....will keep plugging away (this one is driving me crackers!)

I wonder if he is just a lodger. There is an Edmund Batson with the same details who is a B shoemaker in 1891.
1881 he is a bookmaker. Living in Whitechapel.

I was also thinking the surname could just be continuation of the family name and Edmund was unrelated. Unfortunately I think Edmund Batson also appears on the 1861census under Batson living in Amersham or maybe there are two? Edit - which does appear to be the case

Yes there are 2 Edmunds.
This one married Julia Cronin in 1864.

Patten and Batson do have similar sounds

Did James' wife have a brother called Edmund?
