Rev. Patrick Higgins (Tyrone)? c 1888 (Uncle to Mellon family)
« on: Friday 18 October 13 13:38 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks,

I'm looking for any info. on a Rev. Patrick Higgins in Ireland around 1888.

Reading what I believe to be my g granduncle John Mellon's will (1888) aged c 46yrs he has named a Rev. Patrick Higgins as an uncle.

John Mellon died at Killetter Brae Farm, Tyrone although I'm not sure where Patrick Higgins lived?

John's wife was not named on his will only as "my wife."
Issue mentioned on John's will:
Patrick
Mary (Byrne)
Margaret (McMenamin)

There was also a grandson named James Quinn?

The name Quinn doesn't fit with Mary or Margaret so either may have been married twice or had James outwith marriage?

John's parents were James Mellon & Hannah Toland.

Again the surname Higgins is hard to place so not sure which of those 2 he was related to?

Can anyone place Patrick Higgins please?

Annie.

Do you know what religion the family were?

James Quinn (grandson in John Mellon's Will) could easily be the child of a deceased daughter.

Hi Aghadowie,

Yes James could be from a deceased daughter.

The family were Catholic which I forgot to add (was in a hurry to go out) & wanted to post while I remembered.

The fact that they were catholic confuses matters ???

How can I find out when the will was written as there is a paragraph pertaining to John's parents yet John's father James died between 1861 - 1873.

Hannah Tolands will 1896 (John's mother) has her with a farm in Aughafad, Donacavey, Tyrone which she left to her nephew Peter McCarroll of Larnaglare, Tyrone. John Mellon's will mentions a placename Aughalaber (spelling)? in Killetter Brae & I'm curious if the 2 farms were closeby one another?

The Will is dated 17 Jan.1888- as is usual the date appears towards the end of the Will. John Mellon left money for Masses to be said for the repose of his soul as well as for his uncle Rev. Patrick Higgins and his parents so they were all deceased before John wrote the Will in 1888.

Wonder if the townland is Aghalougher but that's in Castlederg Poor Law Union/civil registration district.

Per the RootsIreland index, there is a baptismal / birth record for a James Quin to parents Michael Quin and Alice Mellon, 1872, Tyrone.

Per the same website, there is a civil marriage record for Michael Quin to Allice Mellon, 1871, Tyrone, her father John.

Hi,

John's mother Hannah (Toland) was still alive. She died 1896.

I wonder if this John was a grandson of James Mellon & Hannah Toland or was it a case that when he wrote the will he THOUGHT he was of sound mind ???

I definitely think they are related in some way. Pity he didn't identify his wife by forename at least.

Could Hannah be his stepmother instead of his mother? The wording of the Will is pretty clear.

Hi Gaffy,

Thanks, this certainly raises a ? as I haven't encountered an Alice (yet). Given the yr she married she could well have been a daughter of John & his unknown wife who may also have been Alice?

Can of worms here I think as the 2 wills have thrown up so many different surnames, none of which I had come across.
