Court sessions/Bastardy papers Gretton/Little Weldon 1800 - 1806?
« on: Sunday 20 October 13 14:40 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any mention of a possible father for 2 illegitimate family members; William (K)Napp born in Gretton 1805 and Daniel (K)Napp born in Gretton in 1801 to Ann Napp born 1775 in Little Weldon (and later moved to Gretton).
Any information on this family would be of interest, even if there is no information as to the father.
The dates are too early for census information, and christening records do not give anything other than the mother's name.
Thank you
Sarah

HI Sarah.

I can not help with the bastardy papers for the children.

Have you tried the Northampton Mercury Newpaper Quarter Sessions for
the relevant years.

The original baptisms from Gretton P.R. only state this.

Gretton P.C.
1801
Octr 25 Daniel Bastard son of Ann Knapp

1805
Jany 6 William Bastard son of Ann Knapp

Hi again.

Gretton P.C. Marriage By Banns
Pg. 17, No. 49

Daniel Knapp, otp Bachelor, and Mary Homan, otp, Spinster
were married twenty-fifth December 1820

Daniel signed his mark then it says Sarah Homan signed her mark.
Witnesses: John Warner, John Binder
As Mary is noted as such in the 1841 census for Gretton, maybe it was a clerical error.

May help others also.

Thank you.
I have the family tree as from Ann's grandfather (I think), but nothing from the paternal line from William and Daniel. Seeing as both boys were born in Gretton - and as I have no documentation showing when Ann moved from Little Weldon to Gretton - I can only imagine she knew/met the father(s) in the village.
William Knapp married a Mary Woodward in 1827 in Gretton. Are there witnesses also listed? It's a stab in the dark, but if the same man witnessed at both weddings....Of course, not proveable. I understand single parents weren't seen in the same damning light in the early 1800's as they were in later Victorian times, and am hoping there will be some mention somewhere about the boys paternal line. Would you know where I should look?
I have searched the newspapers. Nothing.

Hi again.

The Northants Record Office is a place you need to get in touch with.

I think for Ann it maybe a case of seeing if any settlement papers survive
for Gretton.

William married Mary in Collyweston not Gretton.

Northants Marriage Indexes note it.
Collyweston
04-Mar 1828
William KNAPP of Ketton, Rutland to Mary WOODWARD otp

If no one does it sooner I can look at the original later in week.

It could have been Parish Wardens who signed as witnesses on Daniels marriage
therefore no link to a possible father.

I will have a look and see if I can find either of them marrying.

The other John Binder marries twice in Gretton in 1779 to Ann Butlin
then to Mary Chapman in 1796.

Goodness the registers are confusing.  :)
John signed his name, Ann Binder signed her mark then the line continues late Butlin.
Witnesses: R. Lister and Jno Spencer

On his marriage to Mary, John signs his name Mary her mark.
Witnesses: Joseph Foster and John Spencer

Thank you!
There doesn't seem to be much mention of my family. Unless Ann Napp called herself Ann West...which I doubt.
Again, thank you for taking the time to ask for me.
