James Strachan shoemaker Aberdeen
« on: Thursday 24 October 13 14:18 BST (UK) »
I have hit a brick wall as James Strachan is a common name! he was a shoemaker in Virgina st, married Margaret Adam  Banchory 1824. died Aberdeen 1842 aged 46.  I can't find an appropriate birth for him.  are there clues for me in the shoemaker trade?  is he likely to be the son of a shoemaker?  James was Dean of the Guild at one time according to memoirs.

The 1841 shows he was not born in Aberdeen although he was born in Scotland

The transcription of the 1841 entry suggests that although he was b Scotland - it was not in Aberdeen.  You would need to view the actual 1841 image on either SP or FindMyPast to confirm if there is an N against born in county

I am getting a John Strachan, dying in Aberdeen in 1842, but not a James on S.P.

I am getting 2 deaths, 1 in 1848 and 1 in 1849 in Aberdeen for a James Strachan.

Regards

Hi,
Looks like James and Margaret's wedding was registered twice in OPR's
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XT5K-5JN
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTRB-VL2

Maybe that could give a clue to James's origins ?  ???

thank you all.   I have just looked at the census, and indeed there is a NO in the "this county" column,  I had never thought that he was born from anywhere else other than Aberdeen so thank you for that.  the death/burial comes up on ancestry   at nellfield cemetery 3rd September, family papers have it he died on 28th august. I have his testament.  Wife Margaret was also buried in nellfield  later.   the marriage registers in Banchory and Old Machar is odd.  Banchory was Margaret's parish, but if old Machar was his, he would show up as being  born in "this county" - wouldn't he?

Hi,
Have you looked at the original entries for both marriage records on Scotland's People? They may and I stress may have where James came from  ???
