This thread seems to have gone off in a different direction. I am only looking for the family in the 1901 census (and 1911 which can't be spoken of here  :-X).

In 1901 they SHOULD be somewhere in the area of North Manchester. What I have for them before and after 1901 is in the area of Collyhurst and Ancoats.

James Glew does not appear as deceased in 1913 on the marriage certificate of his son William John Glew in Ancoats (he was living at 13 New Butler St). The Glew's were not at that address in 1901 or 1911 - I have already checked. In 1901 the other son James was living with his in laws (Dillon), and in 1911 he had already left the country. But his wife Edith, and daughter Lily remained for a time, before they also left the country (for Australia).

I am assuming William John would only have been about 10 when the 1901 census was taken, but I still can't find him!

Thanks for help, Katharine.

If the word 'deceased' appears, then you know he has died.
If it doesn't appear, it's not proof that he was still living!
It wasn't (and isn't) mandatory to put the word deceased after a father's name! ::)

Hi Katharine

as the original poster you can mention what you have found in the 1911 census as you will have paid for it.

What other Rootschatters cannot do is use their subscriptions for research which is not their own family as this breaks the terms and conditions of the sites hosting the 1911 census.

All we can do is use information provided by free searches on numerous sites now and the results given there, not details from transcriptiuons or images.

Hope this helps.

I realise that it is not definitive proof that he was still alive. The spouses' father was given as deceased, so I am going with a hunch that he was still alive.
I am also missing their grandaughter Lily Glew b.1903. Her mother Edith was in the 1911 census, and only herself in the household (the husband had immigrated ahead of her and Lily). I am assuming Lily was enumerated with a relatives household in 1911, but still cannot find her either with all my searching.

As for mentioning 1911 - I think I have amended my request in an earlier post to mention that I am now only asking for lookups from 1901 census.

Thanks so much for that. Stupid me. As soon as I read your post, I realised that I have already seen that entry, but in my recent searching, it didn't seem to be coming up.
I have also re-discovered an entry for a William John Glew b.1891 as being in the 148th Battery Royal Field Artillery, Woolwich, London, in the 1911 census.
But then I saw an obituary for a William John Glew of 77th Brigade Field Artillery died in 1916. I don't know if they are the same man. If so, then this is NOT my missing William John.

For your own interest Mabel, Lily was with her mother sister and family.
