Brighton marriage 1916
« on: Wednesday 30 October 13 10:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi

This is my first post outside my local counties of Essex and Suffolk.

According to FreeBMD my grandmother's sister Lottie Scammell married William Liddington in Brighton in1916. They had a child in 1918 but Lottie remarried in 1920.

I am looking for details about William Liddington ( age and or father's name ) and if possible what happened to him. A casualty in the 1st world war seems the most likely but I cannot trace him in the usual sources.

Can anyone help me please to at least get a start to identifying William.

Thanks in anticipation

Hi, without any more details it will be hard to make sure that you are following the right William Liddington, as there are several of about the right age in the 1901 census. I can't see any that were born in Sussex. The best thing would be to get the marriage certificate as that will give you his age, occupation and father's name.

thanks for the reply Groom.

I agree that the marriage certificate is the sure way to find the answer.

I thought I would try this site first as there is always the possibility that some one has the answer and I know that lots of Rootschatters enjoy the challenge of problem solving.

I cant find an army death for William either. He must have been alive and in the UK at the end of 1917, beginning of 1918 for a child to be born in the December quarter of 1918. The only death of a William Liddington in the UK is in June quarter of 1918 in Portsmouth but he was 80, so probably not the right one.

The old William Liddington who died 1918 aged 80 is not the one - he had been married for a long while before his death and his wife Mary died in 1922 aged 87 - that is one eliminated.

Agreed he must have been alive at the end of 1917. A certain number of WW1 deaths were never recorded and of course there was the influenza pandemic in 1918 but deaths from that should be recorded.

Genes Reunited has two people with his daughter born on the Sussex Surrey border in 1918 in their family trees.  Perhaps one, or both of those knows a little more.   Regards Roy G

That is a good thought Roy - but one I have already taken. I have also spoken to or corresponded with the remaining family members but they know nothing of William but are eager to find out.

Thanks for your input.

Kind regards
Mike

Brilliant find NJ - so he didn't die. I wonder if the daughter wasn't his because he was away at war?
