HMS Indomitable was not in action at that time, so it is possible he was lost overboard in an accident or something similar.

To be honest, anything is possible at the moment. Such information as I have came from http://www.naval-history.net/xDKCas1003-Intro.htm Since it lists no other casualties for Indomitable on that day and Pte Merrington is given as having no known whereabouts I think your suggestion is probably accurate.

1945
29th January - Together with HMS Illustrious, HMS Indefatigable and HMS Victorious, the carriers launched raids on Soengi Gerong oil refineries and airfields Lembak and Tanglangbetoetoe (Operation Meridan Two).  16 RN aircraft lost in the action and another 14 by deck landing accidents.

4th February - HMS Indomitable arrived at Freemantle.

May give you an idea where he may have been if onboard the ship.
