Trish, from what you found and the original image that you linked: Born in Chatham (Kent, England?) but up at Canongate Edinburgh...I think it shows.

From here www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/ - there are two references to the proceedings and trial:

AD14/37/244 - 1837 - Precognition against Ann Ashton for the crime of theft by housebreaking, habit and repute at Windsor Street, Edinburgh; Elm Row, Edinburgh. The Accused: Ann Ashton, Address: North Back of Canongate, Edinburgh.

JC26/1837/468 - 26 Apr 1837 - Trial papers relating to Ann Ashton for the crime of theft by housebreaking, habit and repute at Windsor Street, Edinburgh . Tried at High Court, Edinburgh. The Accused: Ann Ashton, Verdict: Guilty, Sentence: Transportation - 7 years.

These documents can be ordered directly from the National Records of Scotland site using the above references. There may be more personal info showing there relating to Ann that might help.

One possibility in 1818 in Chatham https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/J9VH-KJC

Ashton as a surname is rare in Scotland at that time. This entry stands out in 1841:

John Ashton 56, Officer Excise b. England
Anna Ashton 30 b. England
Thomas Ashton 9 b. England
Joseph Ashton 3 b. England
William Ashton 1 b. Midlothian
Jane Dumbreck 20 lodger b. b. Scotland
Anne Lyon 20 , female servant b. Scotland

Address: High Str, Duddingston and South Leith, Midlothian

By 1851, the family is down in Gateshead, Durham with mother Ann showing as widowed (HO107/2402/474/13).

No idea if this family is at all connected to your Ann b. 1818/9. Need more hard facts don't we before we can really develop this more...

A report of her trial included here www.rootschat.com/links/0wqq/ - link shrunk from google books. No personal details included on this, just really a legal debate on one of the charges against Ann...

I think you may be correct in the Chatham link Monica as Ihad also checked out any Ashtons in 1841 Census in Scotland and most were born England.

Hello Ratty2, Ann Ashton is my Great, Great, Great Grandmother.   We live in Hobart Tasmania. The Family does have a lot of Records on Ann Ashton and John Williams, but we have to go through a lot of old paperwork files. We will
have and get back to you on that.  She did have a few children, one of her son was named George.
Ann was at Cascade Female Factory.   Thanks, Wade
