1851 Census - Gilman
« on: Monday 04 November 13 14:27 GMT (UK) »
Searching for any and all information on the Gilman family - they appear in the 1851 Census in Maidstone at 30 Barham Row. Elizabeth and her daughter Rebecca are listed and Elizabeth is shown as married (other information that I have indicates her husband as George Gilman) Where is he? Where was Barham Row?

Thomas Welch, 1874, son of Charles and Rebecca Welch from England
(All of the above emigrated to Canada except Thomas born Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)

Thanks keyboard86,

Sorry. I should mention that I am on Ancestry.com and I was looking at the actual image. I should have realized that the "30" was not house # considering that the street changes from Barham Row to Bone Alley and the number increases by 1. Does the fact that a schedule #'d 30 mean that there is more information?

:) No the schedule no: just basically tells you on the return which household was there.

What knowledge do you have of George, and where the family were in later returns?

I had no information on the time the family lived in England or even where in England. Eventually I found the birth record for my grandfather (maternal) and it gave his parents of which I believe Rebecca Gilman is his mother. The info I have indicates that she was born 1843 and that she married a Charles C. Welch. This is based on a cemetery record which shows my grandfather (Thomas Welch) being the informant for Rebecca Welch with the relationship of "son"and that her parents were Elizabeth and George Gilman of England. Charles C. Welch's similar cemetery record also shows Thomas as informant and relationship of son. Eventually both George and Elizabeth emigrate to Canada. On George's cemetery record there is no mention of any informant but on Elizabeth's the informant is Thomas Welch, her grandson. On George's record, it mentions birthplace of Kent, England. The cemetery records were so helpful.

This would be feasible as children were born starting in 1868....Annie in early 1868, Charles in 1869 and the emigration to Canada, where 5 more children were born. Where can I see or get a copy of this marriage record?

Thank you.

PS I found the Free BMD Index record for both reference 2a766. So then I would have to order from the GRO for another 10 pounds.
