Arthur WRIGHT
« on: Wednesday 06 November 13 20:11 GMT (UK) »
Looking for death/burial of Arthur Wright.  Arthur was born in London in 1872 but was living in Franklin Road, Portslade with his father and sister when the 1901 census was taken.  He's shown as 'deaf since birth' and has no occupation.  I cannot find Arthur on the 1911 census although his father and sister are living at Montpelier Street, Brighton.  I therefore tend to believe that Arthur probably died between the two censuses.

Are there any on-line records I could check for this area (I don't live in Sussex)?

Can anyone tell me the names of the most likely cemeteries for Portslade and Brighton?

Any other suggestions appreciated.

Thanks Nanny Jan.  I've looked on FreeBMD but there are several possibles and I was hoping to pin it down a bit more before ordering a certificate.  Do you know which cemeteries I could check?

Sorry, not local to know about cemeteries but they would want a date of death to be able to search and some now charge for look-ups.

Looking at FreeBMD, there are 9 London born Arthur Wrights in 1872.  Which was him, for some are listed with middle names.
Looking at FreeBMD again, this time for Sussex, there is only one Sussex death between 1901-1911 that may have been him.  That death took place a few miles outside  Brighton in Hailsham.  Considering Arthur had difficulties, could his family have put him into a home or a parish workhouse?

Deaths Dec 1909 WRIGHT Arthur    aged 35 Hailsham district Ref 2b   62.

Here is a page showing the various cemeteries.  If you follow the link 'Bereavement services' it gives you contact details.  I imagine they would tell you whether you have enough information to trace a burial.

Presuming that's him in Smee Road Bow in 1881, I note he then had 9 siblings, any one of which could have taken over responsibility for his care post 1901 when his mother Ellen was dead and his father was in his mid 60s.  Did any of his siblings relocate to the Hailsham area of Sussex?

Thanks everyone!

I haven't found Arthur's birth cert. yet as there are so many possibles and the family moved frequently in London.  I was hoping to find a bapt. on Ancestry but there isn't one (even though his siblings are all listed).  As there's no mention of a middle name or initial on the 1881, 1891 or 1901 census I have assumed he didn't have one.

Yes that's Arthur in Smeed Road in 1881 – I have located all his siblings on the 1911census and he doesn't appear with any of them.  I don't feel either that he would have entered a workhouse.  There was a Deaf & Dumb Institution in Eastern Road, Brighton but I couldn't see him listed but  I do wonder if that's why his father moved to Brighton.   As the 1891 and 1901 show him without an occupation and he's not with family I just have a feeling he died.  I think my best bet now is to order the death cert. in Hailsham and go from there.  Thanks again everyone.

I've have now received the death cert. for Arthur in Hailsham and it was the correct one.  Sadly he died in the East Sussex County Asylum (Hellingly).  Thanks to everyone who helped with this.
