help with Latin, please
« on: Friday 08 November 13 19:00 GMT (UK) »
Not strictly a family history question, but could I ask our Latin experts for a bit of help:
I've been asked to suggest a Latin motto/phrase suitable for putting above the door of a pub/restaurant.
Putting aside the thought that we should perhaps be recommending moderation in this area, I've borrowed from Horace " Nunc est bibendum".
Would it be correct Latin to add " nunc est vivendum" or have I made an grammatical error?
PS- am also suggesting that our local regiment's motto "Virtutis Fortuna Comes" should have a place somewhere in said establishment.
Thanks for any help.

nunc est vivendum is grammatically correct. nunc est edendum = now is the time to eat.
de gustibus non est disputandum = there's no arguing over taste. non in solo pane vivit homo = man does not live on bread alone .................

Interestingly, nunc est bibendum was the caption on a poster advertising Michelin tyres. It showed the "Michelin man" about to down a goblet of broken glass and nails to emphasise the toughness of the product. Because of the caption, the "Michelin man" was given the name Bibendum. Maybe frequent visits to your establishment risk a customer putting on weight, like the Michelin man. Or perhaps it is an indirect way of hinting at a Michelin star?

The Oxford University motto, Dominus illuminatio mea, is widely mis-translated as a pub motto, Landlord, I feel all lit up. Not sure that this helps at all....

How about:

'Ingrediatur ad periculum tuum' = Enter at your own peril.

There's always the old Descartes paraphrase "Bibo ergo sum"(or for some "Sum ergo bibo")
