Looking for death of William Woodruff b 1864.
« on: Sunday 10 November 13 16:28 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I cannot find William after 1901 census in Dover with his wife Mary and family. She is showing as Housekeeper in 1911 with the children plus others born after 1901.

William was a Stoker in 1901.
Any help  would be most appreciated.
Calmar

For information of others looking, he is William Woodruff in 1891 but John W Woodruff in 1901. He was born in Gibraltar c1864 and was in the Navy in 1901 according to the census
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

14 October 1904 Mary Woodruff asks for a separation order from William Woodruff on the grounds of desertion . He left her 14 months earlier.
Hope it helps explain why he is not with the family in 1911.

I think you will find that the occupation is Navvy not Navy (1901 census).

I would agree with that( he's a Navvy,ie a labourer).

There is an 1864 b William Woodruff (aged 41) travelling out to Sydney Australia on 16 Oct 1905 on the Coolgarlie ,as a general steward, original location Kent.

In 1914 he seems to be living in Wilmot,Westbury   Tasmania.

This is a new fact for me Panda! Can you tell me where you obtained this info from please. It would certainly explain why William is missing after 1901 census.  Would this explain her photo with a number she is holding? I wondered if she had been in the Workhouse or similar place but didn't find any record for that.

Mary  died In St Augustine's Hospital Chartham, Kent in April 1951.

I also found the record for Australia but couldn't find a death in Australia. It makes me think that this is him as he doesn't show up in any records in England after 1901, census or army.

Yes he was  a Navvy at some point after leaving the army.

My thanks to you all for looking.

Regards,
Calmar
