ww1 marraige permission.
« on: Sunday 10 November 13 16:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Hoping someone can help. My brother is looking for a source regarding when Soldiers were allowed to marry freely and not have, to have permission. Namely the Guards that did Royal Duties.

He needs to find a book or web site that gives him the facts. not hear say.

It is for his university Degree essay.

Many Thanks

He would have to inform his CO of the marriage to change his next of kin and qualify for consideration for married quarters, but soldiers did marry without permission and it was noted as such in their records.

There was no requirement to provide a birth certificate for either enlisting or getting married.

Normally if permission had been asked from the CO a brief leave was granted.

I cannot see why the Guards would have been different.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

I married in 1962 and was in the Scots Guards at the time, I had to have written permission from my wife's father and present this to the CO to obtain his permission, Permission was granted after that, and as Hackstaple said a period of leave was granted at the appropriate time.
and that's a fact 'cos she is still with me.

James

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies, but I think we have solved finding a source.

Women of the Regiment: marriage and the Victorian Army by Myna Trustram.

Found this in his university library.
