Bridgnorth records
« on: Monday 11 November 13 12:35 GMT (UK) »
Help I am stuck I thought I had found the parents of Elizabeth Downes born 1841 Bridgenorth who married George Davies then I found that who I thought was her mum turned up as mother in law to a completely different Elizabeth of the same age. Hey ho back to square one
Can anyone help me find an ELIZABETH DOWNES or possibly DOWNEY born 1841 in Bridgnorth please She married George DAVIES Q4 1861 in Bridgnorth district. This is my cousin's husband's tree so I am reluctant to send for the certificate until all other avenues have closed
Many thanks

Many thanks for your help. Now that is an interesting find but I think George was the son of Richard and Maria Davies
George is a stone mason and on censuses when he and Elizabeth are together is shown as born Bridgnorth 1841 or 42 this lead me back to this 1861 census RG 9/1850 fo57 p8 with a George son of Richard and Maria. What do you think of that match?
So far I haven't found him on the 1871 and 1851 censuses I wonder if anyone can help.
Elizabeth is always given as born 1841-1843 according to which census  as they marry in 1861 Is he would have been at the oldest 19 so I doubt that she was a widow. So the only other way her father would have a different surname is if she was in fact illegitimate or had been bought up by a step father both possible
I wonder what my next step should be?

Looking at her again she does look a good match but a bit old. I wonder if she is the one with Andrew and Ann in 1841from Cleo Mortimer, she seems to be born in 1840 so a bit old for Mrs Davies I've been looking for a marriage for Thomas Baker and a DOWNES with no joy in Shropshire BMD

Thought I had it a Benjamin Downes married a Mary Baker in 1844 and yes they had an Elizabeth born before the wedding but sadly this one was born in 1838 so too old again.

Hi,

I’m in Bridgnorth Library with access to the town Parish records.
I should complete some other jobs first but I’ve had a quick look at that 25 Dec 1861 marriage for you.

Gorge DAVIES, age 23, Bachelor, of Cartway, Bridgnorth. Father = John DAVIES, a Labourer.
Elizabeth DOWNES, age 23, Spinster, of Cartway, Bridgnorth. Father = Thomas BARKER [maybe BAKER] a Farmer.
