William Woodruff sailed to Australia in 1905, I am looking for his death
« on: Monday 11 November 13 13:17 GMT (UK) »
Any help need to trace this man's death.

Possibly in Australia as he sailed from Dover Kent in 1904 as a ships steward, so paid his way across. He was born 1864 in Gibraltar and lived with his wife Mary Strood until 1901 census in Dover Kent, which is where I am struggling to trace him

Mary  was housekeeper in 1911 to another man, but no sign of William.

There is a 1914 record for a  William Woodruff in Wilmot Tasmania, Could this be him.
It doesn't help me when both country or date is not shown on these Electoral rolls!

Regards,
Desperate,
Calmar :)

Do you have Williams Parents names? There is only one death on NSW BDM of a William WOODRUFF between 1905 and 1982.

I cannot access Tasmanian BDM as they don't have an online search facility. Each State in Australia have their own records there is no one National Library of BDM's. So he may have moved on from Tasmania?

Hopefully someone with access to a hard copy of records may come along and check.

I am confused when you say he paid his own way - surely they paid him if he was a steward  :o

If he was a crew member you may find him here on mariners and crew in Australian Waters http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/

cheers,
   Ros

The ship was the Coolgardie and they have several 1905 trips transcribed but not at the end of the year  :(
And then at the end of 1906.   Just looking to see if he continued to work for them ...

Here's W Woodruff as a second steward on the Monaro age 42 from London in 1909 http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/1909/08/001mon.htm (several more trips for him on  Monaro in1909)
and in 1910 http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/1910/01/012mon.htm

And here's a W Woodruff in 1902, chief steward, age 40  from Deal
http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/1902/09/088bri.htm

Well I will leave you to browse ...  looks like he continued to go back and forth perhaps?

Four people with the surname WOODRUFF are living in the Evandale district in 1914 according to the Electoral Rolls

These two share a non=specific address  of Blessington, Evandale
WOODRUFF, William, no occupation
WOODRUFF, Matilda Ann. HD's

Another two at Evandale are
WOODRUFF, William Charles
WOODRUFF, Thomas.

The roll shows the same in 1919 and 1922.

William woodruff, Labourer of Blessington applies to have his 4 children put into care.  His wife has left him.

Examiner  Thursday 19 December 1907

There are other items including some for WILLIAM CHARLES, mostly to do with charges of vagrancy.

This is a funeral Notice for William WOODRUFF
1923

The four children seem to make it unlikely this is your chap.

Another article dated 30th December 1921 has a William Woodruff of Evandale locked up for vagrancy as a YOUNG MAN. ???

I see no reason for the poster to believe that the William WOODRUFF sought ever stayed in Australia. He could have gone back to England or indeed anywhere.
