It seems the buttons on the whistles have the name of the constabulary they were made for rather than the unicorn

Yes, I noted that earlier.  However the escargot whistle in the link that Jool posted doesn't seem to have the constabulary name on it.

I would think if they used the same buttons as were used as buttons, if you see what I mean, it wouldn't be economical to have them without the manufacturer's name on the back. That would mean having a different machine to produce them.

To follow up on what Jan said at #25 and 28 perhaps Dowlers had a load of pre-stamped on the back buttons that they utilised for all sorts of purposes.

Out of interest this is more or less where I found it, some half to three quarter of a metre below existing ground level.

And this is a general view of my poor garden with the emerging stone foundations in the lower left centre.  The original (as we have known it) garden slopes down to a small stream.  We have found even more of these foundations since.

Do you offer to dig other gardens in the search for interesting artifacts Maggie? ;D

Seriously though, that is an interesting find.
If it is from a police whistle as suggested could that mean a police station in the vicinity, your house for instance.  Or maybe a policeman on the hunt for a miscreant could have dropped it.

Finding things such as that certainly whet the appetite for further information!
