Smith in Hilton/Toft
« on: Tuesday 19 November 13 16:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi
William smith b approx 1817 in Hilton D 1866 in Croydon
Married Elizabeth Lock in 1850 in Caxton/Toft
Had 3 children 1 called Lucy in Grantcombe in 1851 and the other 2 in croydon
I cant find out what happened to them after 1851 census - I have tried tones of searches in 1861 census but no luck
also any other records?
I know at the time of Lucys birth and in 1851 he was registered as a farmers baliff in Gotobeds Farm Chesterton.
Any help will be fantastic thanks

OK . have seen that widowed Elizabeth Smith on 1871, in Croydon with children  William and Ann but not Lucy

How have you linked that family to the 1851 family in Grantchester of William, Elizabeth and child  Lucy?

With a name such as Smith, just the fact that Elizabeth was born Croydon is not enough!

It is generally better if you don't duplicate posts initially as it leads to people duplicating replies.  :) :)

How did you get back to it being your family in Cambridgeshire, which of the children is your direct line.
Liz has answered my question  :)

Yes, it is clear that Lucy, born Grantchester is the daughterof William and Elizabeth, that is borne out by the 1851 census.  It was how you linked that family with the widowed Elizabeth in Croydon 20 yrs later I was seeking confirmation of.
Just as an aside, that last post looks very much as if it has been copied and pasted from another site - watch out for copyright issues!

I see Lucy has middle name Elizabeth
Is this her marriage, I wonder? If so, where is she on 1861/1871?

4 Feb 1877
Christchurch Croydon
Lucy Elizabeth Smith 27 spinster of Thornton Heath father William labourer
To
William Baker 32 widower of Gloucester Road father Henry Woodman laboiurer
Both signed
Witnesses William Smith, Ann Smith, Ann Edsell

But cant see the couple in 1881 to confirm back that it is her!
