Scullion & McKeown in Rasharkin, County Antrim, Northern Ireland
« on: Wednesday 27 November 13 17:24 GMT (UK) »
I had an earlier post regarding Arthur McKeown and his wife Sarah (Scullion) McKeown. I have received much valuable help from members of RootsChat and from one in particular.

Now I have some loose ends I am trying to tie up. There was a daughter by the name of Margaret McKeown Baptized 31 Jul 1864 at St. Mary's RC Church in Tamlaght Rasharkin, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. I had originally found that record through an LDS microfilm of the original church record I saw in 1992. However, I am unable to find any further information on Margaret. Her 3 sisters all emigrated to Boston by the turn of the century, but not Margaret as far as I can tell, so I suspect she may have married, or possibly died, in Rasharkin. I would like to find some record of her beyond her birth.

The other major mystery, relates to Sarah Scullion who was married to Arthur McKeown and who died 17 Jan 1901 in Tamlaght Rasharkin, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. We have her date of birth as about 1836, in Antrim. Also, on my grandmother's (Matilda McKeown) Baptismal record (04 Apr 1880) from St. Mary's RC Church Rasharkin, there is a sponsor named Matilda Scullion. Perhaps this is a sister or even mother of Sarah. It indicates that Sarah had family living in the area at that time.

I have not been able to find any information on Sarah's family or her marriage to Arthur, her date and place of birth, her parents names and place of birth, her siblings, etc. Perhaps some of this information is available in the St. Mary's records.

Any help in locating these records would be greatly appreciated.

I have communicated with St. Mary's Church and they have checked their records for further instances of Margaret McKeown beyond her Baptism. Only the baptism could be found.

As for a record of the marriage of Sarah Scullion and Arthur McKeown, nothing was found. No record showing her parents was found.

The only other record of a Scullion that was found, was for the marriage of a Roger Scullion to Elizabeth Darragh 01 Dec 1883 Tamlaght. There is no mention of any relationship to Sarah.

Thank you very much for that. I was not aware of that listing. Our Sarah would have beee 15 at that time, if our date of birth of 1836 is correct, so apparently she was not from these families. But, it is good to know there were others in the area.

Thank you again

This interests me as I am possibly a son of a Rasharkin McKeown and a son of a Rasharkin McGuckan, who I note is on this list.

Does anyone have any information on these families. Hyndman McGuckan (McGuckian, McGookin, McGuigan) is my link to here.

Did you check on the part of the family that stayed in Rasharkin and is still there today?
