Timothy O'Keefe - baptised 21st October 1847
« on: Friday 06 December 13 19:10 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have found the baptisms of my 3 x Great uncle (Timothy Keefe) and his siblings in County Cork (1824-1847).

They were all children of Jeremiah Keeffe and Catherine Driscol.

1). Ellen Keefe bap. Kilbrittain 28th Sep 1824

2). Thomas Keeffe bap. Kilbrittain Jan 1830

3). John Keeffe bap. Kilbrittain 1st July 1832

4). Catherine Keeffe bap. Kilbrittain 6th Aug 1834

5). James Keeffe bap. Kilbrittain Aug 1836

6). Cornelius Keeffe bap. Kilbrittain 18th Oct 1838

7). Jeremiah Keeffe bap. Kilbrittain 1st Jan 1841

8). Jeremiah Keeffe bap. Kilbrittain Dec 1841

9). Daniel Keeffe bap. Kilbrittain 20th June 1844

10). Timothy Keeffe bap. 21st Oct 1847
baptised in LISLEE, ABBEYMAHON & DONOUGHMORE (BARRYROE) - but listed
as Timothy Keeffe of Kilbrittain.

The family moved to Cardiff, Wales soon after the birth of Timothy.

The question I have is:

Timothy is listed in the census as thus:-

1851 - birthplace = Ireland;
1861 - birthplace = Ireland;
1871 - birthplace = born at sea;
1881 - birthplace = Bristol, England;
1891 - birthplace = Cardiff, Wales;
1901 - birthplace = Cardiff, Wales;
1911 - birthplace = Cardiff, Wales.

He was clearly born in Ireland - but his brothers and sisters were listed as being baptised in Kilbrittain.

He is listed as being baptised in LISLEE, ABBEYMAHON & DONOUGHMORE (BARRYROE).

I have searched for Barryroe, but it is listed (modern-day) as being an off-shore oil base.

What would Barrryroe have in 1847?

Does it tie in with Timothy being "Born at Sea" (1871 census)?

Also, can anybody tell me what churches the family were baptised in (in Kilbrittain and Barryroe)?

Thanks,

Darin, England.

Barryroe is definitely on dry land. You need to look at a map and locate the village of Courtmacsherry. The parish of Barryroe is basically this peninsula, or a good chunk of it. The diocesan website, www.corkandross.org is a good starting point for information on churches. There should be an entry for each parish on there.
