Read Family - Billingshurst
« on: Friday 06 December 13 20:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

My 3x gt grandmother Jane Read (1824-1913) was born in Billingshurst in 1824. she gives Billingshurst as her place of birth on all censuses.

I have found on familysearch a baptism for Jane & what looks to be 3 siblings & 2 other baptisms that I am not sure about, all baptised in Billingshurst.

To John & Jane Reed:

Hn Reed (Female) 6th June 1819 (Hn I believe is Hannah)
William Reed 9th June 1822
Jane Reed 24th October 1824 (My 3x gt grandmother)
Henry Reed 30th Dec 1827

The 2 that I am unsure about are:

J Reed (Male) 27th August 1809 (To John Reed & Jane) (10 years between this & 1819 baptism, so same couple or not?)
Rd Reed 3rd November 1816 (To John Reed & Jenny) (Different couple?)

Also I have been unable to find a marriage for the parents John & Jane.

Hope someone can help with this.

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

David

Hi

There is a 'removal order' record of a John and Jane Read in 1808

http://srs1901.org/plrecordbyrid.asp?Id=583

If this is your couple the marriage would pre date 1808

There is a marriage in Lancing 5 December 1805 of a John Read and Jenny Hollingdale, and Jenny is a variant of Jane.

Here are all the baptisms of children I can find of John/Jenny  and John/Jane to see if they overlap and prove they are two couples

Sarah bp. 8 Feb 1807 LANCING. parents John/Jenny
James Hollingdale bp. 3 Nov 1811 LANCING , parents John / Jenny
Ann bp 3 Apr 1814 LANCING, parents John/ Jenny
Rd bp. 3 November 1816 Billingshurst John /Jenny

Hn  "   6 June 1819  Billinghurst, parents:  John/ Jane
William bp. 9 June 1822   "             "            "       "
Jane bp  24th October 1824 "         "            "      "
Henry bp 30 December 1827 "        "            "       ".

I can't find a baptism of a JENNY Hollingdale but there is a JANE Hollingdale bp. 14 October 1787 Lancing, daughter of JAMES and ANN Hollingdale. I'm thinking now they may well be one and the same person.

The daughter Ann I think marries a William Goatcher,  on two census's 1851 and 1861 she lists her birthplace as Lancing on one, Billingshurst the other.

Hi Claire,

Many thanks indeed for your replies, very much appreciated.

The removal order is a bit of a surprise, never come across one of those before! :) If I'm reading it correctly are John & Jane being removed from Lancing to Billingshurst? Also would I be able to view the original document & if so where?

Many thanks for the baptism details re John/Jenny & John/Jane, much appreciated. Were you able to see the baptism of J Reed (Male) to John & Jane on 27th August 1809 in Billingshurst mentioned in my OP? As this one seems to be missing.

I agree that Jane & Jenny are looking like one & the same person at present. The Jane Hollingdale baptism in 1787 that you found would match the 1841 Census details I have for them in Billingshurst. John age 60 an Ag lab, Jane age 50 & son Henry age 14.

Many thanks again.

Kind regards

David

Hi Claire,

Many thanks again for your reply, very much appreciated.

Many thanks for the link. Many of the types of documents shown are completely new to me, so this should be most interesting indeed! Not delved into Poor Law records as such before, time to start I guess! :)

Where would I find the original documents? West Sussex Record Office at Chichester or elsewhere?

Many thanks again.

Kind regards

Hi

Glad to have helped

Firstly, the 1809 baptism is on FindMyPast and the 'J' is for John

The poor law documents are held at West Sussex Records Office
