Thomas Beard,soldier,Stockport,1799.
« on: Saturday 07 December 13 15:49 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know, please, how to look up the records for the above soldier?

He married in Stockport in 1799 & it said soldier on his marriage certificate & by 1800 was living in Donington, Shropshire where his 1st child was born & he was an ag lab.  We believe he was born in 1776 ish in Longhope, Gloucs.

Thanks to anyone who can help.
Amberly.

Hi Amberly

He may have been a militiaman. So it would be worth asking the local record office if they have any militia records. They took a kind of census of men 16 to 60(?) and selected a certain number by ballot.

In case he was a Regular soldier you should look for online newspaper archives to see what regiments were in Stockport in 1799. You will then have to look at the muster rolls in Kew to see if a man of that name was serving in the regiments you find.

Hi Rosie & Trevor,
Thanks for you efforts, I couldn't find anything on FindMyPast either.

To Tina, thanks but he's not the correct Thomas Beard!

Thanks Ken, he probably was a militia man & signed on at 16, & then when he married at 23, he left & became an ag lab but why he chose to live in Donington & Albrighton in Shrops for the rest of his life I don't know.  But will have a try at the local record office like you suggest.

Thanks to all of you for your help.
