I notice there is a 7yr gap between your fathers birth and his sister in 1923.  Unless Lillie lost other children in between - it may be an indication that Lindsay wasn't always at home.

I think his brother (Frederick) George emigrated to America in 1906 as George Molland.  In 1901 his occupation was joiner and that tallies with the passenger list for 1906 and his birthyear 1884

Mother Fanny Amelia died 4.2.1939 - she was a widow.  Probate granted to daughter Jessie Amelia Barton wife of John Barton.  Effects £329 17s 3d

Father George Lowton Molland died 27.8.1935.  Probate to widow Fanny Amelia and daughter Jessie Amelia Barton.  Effects £405 15s 6d

I did see a passenger list that had a L Molland going to Southampton from America . I don't know if it is defiantly him .
I thought that it was quite a gap too. Does it mean anything normally as to who registers the birth of the child , is it normally the mother or father or doesn't it matter. I don't know if I'm just clutching at straws.

All the birth certs I've seen have shown the mother registering the birth.  I'm not entirely sure whether the father had to be present in the case of a married couple but I know that in the case of an illegitimate child, the father had to sign the register if his name was to appear on the birth cert.

It may be that as long as the mother was able to show a marriage cert - the father was taken as stated

Thanks for getting back to me on that , just me clutching at straws . Its such a shame no one in the family knows any more .

As to the passenger list , one thing I just thought of is how did he get to America? More confusion !

Before I forget , just wanted to say thank you for your help. I wish I had signed up for rootschat when I started researching.

I can have a root through the Jersey marriage indexes for the marriage but it won't be until January as the Archive is closed until then.
