I have a Mac and have bought a family tree programme to build my tree on my computer - so it is private and I can add living people.

 - I use Reunion and find it excellent.  It was specifically built for Mac computers - but I believe they may be making one which will go on PCs now!

 - the one downside with my particular programme is that I can't share it with people using PCs - but in the upgraded systems I believe that may be possible.

You can Google the programme and see what you think of it!  Reunion for Macs

I have used Reunion for years and love it.  If i get stuck with anything the online help is very clear and easy to follow.   In the past I have successfully transferred information to a PC using a Gedcom which again is easy to do.  I don't know if this is still the same as I haven't done it for a while.
I have a friend who uses Family Tree Maker for Mac and is very happy with it
Hope this helps!
